G-BAND: HANDMAID'S TALE, "SOUL SCROLLS" PP. 151-170

For this blog post, please choose one passage/line and look closely at its language. Do your best to really question what Atwood is doing in her writing and what meaning she is creating as a result of these choices. What is she conveying and HOW is she conveying this meaning? You can still ask questions and make connections, but try to have these comments and questions relate to specific word choice. Remember to respond to one other classmate. And remember to not repeat passages!

G-BAND: HANDMAID'S TALE PP. 103-127

What stands out to you about Birth Days? What about Offred's commentary on the rise in pollution, chemicals, birth defects and infertility? What stands out to you about Offred's mother? Why weave her mother's story into the Birth Day scene? Choose a passage and explain why it seems significant to you. Work from places of confusion-- perhaps choose some lines that you don't quite understand and explore them. Perhaps you ask a question and answer it. You can also just respond to a passage, explaining why it stands out to you and what it reveals about a character, conflict or big idea. Either way, make sure that you respond to someone else and do not repeat passages!

G-BAND: SLAUGHTERHOUSE CHAPTERS 10 (AND 1)

What passages stand out to you from Chapter 10? What connections can you make to the previous chapters? Why return to Vonnegut's life and perspective in Chapter 10? Why integrate his war story with Billy's?

Why would Vonnegut, in trying to make sense of and write truthfully about his war experience, choose this story (aliens, Billy) as his way to write about war? Any hints from returning to Chapter 1/reading about about his writing process?

Please try to answer at least one of these questions, or ask a BIG question of your own. Make sure you start your reflection with a passageAlso, make sure that you respond to someone else.

G-BAND: SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE P. 107-END OF CHAPTER 5

For tonight's blog, please choose a line from the text, quote it (with the page number), and then ask a question based off of this line. AUTHENTIC QUESTIONS ARE GOOD! IN OTHER WORDS, IT'S OKAY TO START A POST WITH, "THIS LINE CONFUSED ME..."

Then, try to answer your own question. Dig deep. Perhaps try out a couple of potential answers. Perhaps, in your answer, provide/connect your analysis to an idea of a piece of textual evidence from earlier in the novel, or a short story we've read. DO NOT REPEAT SOMEONE ELSE'S QUOTATION/IDEA. MAKE SURE THAT THE LINE IS FROM PP. 107-137.

YOU MUST ALSO RESPOND TO A CLASSMATE'S QUESTION. Agree or disagree, but make sure that you add something new-- a new idea, a reference to another part of the book. Include textual evidence as you push the conversation forward.

G-BAND: SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE PP. 87-107

For tonight's blog, please choose a line from the text, quote it (with the page number), and then ask a question based off of this line. What does the line mean? What does it say about war/the effects of war? What could characters, moments or details represent/signify on a larger scale? What is Vonnegut saying about consumerism, religion, social activism vs. apathy or innocence and their relationship to war? How is life on Tralfamadore like war?

Then, try to answer your own question. Dig deep. Perhaps try out a couple of potential answers. Perhaps, in your answer, provide/connect your analysis to an idea of a piece of textual evidence from earlier in the novel. It's okay if you don't know the answer. Points of confusion get us thinking.
